Spiral for LB is part of Shotz’s ongoing investigation into spiral structures, which appear throughout nature and can be seen in sunflowers, weather patterns-hurricanes, vine tendrils, galaxies, nautilus shells, snail shells, whirlpools, and are a recurrent form in her work. The initials in the title refer to the late sculptor Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010), who also used the spiral throughout her artistic career. Shotz’s Spiral is meant to echo the height of the artist herself. Bourgeois’s sculpture Spiral Woman (1984), which was an inspiration for this work, was also intended as a type of self-portrait.
